Tupac fans should be happy to hear that principle photography for the long-awaited Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me finally wrapped a few days ago on the 14th of April 2016. The film is now in post-production. Principle photography began in December 2015 and wrapped in Las Vegas, Nevada where the final scene to be filmed was the shooting of the late, great rapper who died on September 13th, 1996 at the age of 25.
Demetrius Shipp, Jr plays the part of Tupac in the film which is directed by Benny Boom. The film will portray the life of Pac starting from his youth all the way to his death. “We're starting from before he was born,” Benny told BillBoard earlier this year. “His parents were Black Panthers. You see the struggles of his youth, his relationship with his mother, father figures that were in and out of his life, and what he developed into as a man from that. It humanizes him”
The film is also expected not to pull any punches as far as Pac’s run-ins with the law and the negative personality traits he had are concerned. “That's a big part of his story, because [that conviction] completely changed his life. We don't sugarcoat things,” Boom told BillBoard. The omission of Dr. Dre’s history of violence against women was a huge bone of contention that many people had with the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. Boom also pointed out that the film will not be all about the Pac and Biggie beef as that is but a portion of a larger story. “Our film is about truth -- it's not about anybody's side of the story. These were young guys acting irrationally, but hadn't walked in manhood long enough to understand how to deal with situations. They had armies around them to hype them up. It's a cautionary tale,” Boom said.
While filming in Vegas the film production team was presented with a proclamation by the Clark County Commissioner, Lawrence Weekly, in honor of the work they were doing. An official release date has not been announced yet, however there’s speculation that it might be released later this year somewhere close to the twentieth anniversary of the rappers death.
Hopefully this film will follow in the footsteps of Straight Outta Compton as far as critical and financial success is concerned. The 2009 movie Notorious, which depicts the life of Tupac’s friend-turned-rival The Notorious B.I.G., was criticized for being lackluster and taking a generic approach towards the subject matter.
